Authorities in another state have arrested a former nurse and accused her of abusing one of her elderly patients. Police say that the ex-nurse was employed by a health care facility that catered to the elderly. She has been charged with nursing home abuse relating to her inappropriate treatment of a 96-year-old woman, who was being treated by the facility. The 27-year-old ex-nurse was taken into custody on a recent Tuesday.
Although this case happened out of state, Pennsylvania nursing homes can be fraught with all manner of abuse, neglect and inappropriate behavior by the staff members charged with safeguarding residents' health. This kind of negligence is not only unlawful, it is criminal in most cases. Indeed, those who commit such abuse can be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
In this particular nursing home abuse case, police say that officials associated with the nursing home were the ones who first reported the abuse to them. A police detective who is working on the case said that the nurse was accused of striking an elderly patient in the head with her hand multiple times. She has also been accused of twisting the woman's arm.
The allegedly abused 96-year-old woman and her family may wish to speak with a legal professional regarding the strength and viability of a potential nursing home abuse case. In the state of Pennsylvania, for example, the victims of nursing home abuse can pursue civil claims for financial restitution in court. Liable parties in such cases may include staff members and nursing home facilities that have a legal responsibility to prevent nursing home abuse from happening at their facilities.
