Doing your part to prevent nursing home abuse

It is heartbreaking to think that anything that resembles elder abuse could ever happen in a Pennsylvania nursing home, but the fact is that this kind of abuse is common throughout the state. Unfortunately, the situation only appears to be getting worse as more and more baby boomers advance in years to be the age where they require round-the-clock medical assistance. With more people in nursing homes, more instances of nursing home abuse is inevitable.

One of the biggest problems at nursing homes involves the fact that these facilities are for-profit businesses that often try to cut costs and corners. Unfortunately, labor is one of the areas that tends to get cut at nursing facilities, so situations of too many patients and too few nurses begin to be more prevalent. Putting pressure on overworked staff like this creates situation where abuse and neglect are more likely to occur.

By pursuing legal claims for restitution regarding instances of nursing home abuse and nursing home neglect, Pennsylvania residents can draw more attention to this very real and unfortunate issue. With more attention in the court system, lawmakers begin to take notice, and that is when real change often starts. Indeed, new policies are required at nursing facilities to ensure that nursing home residents feel comfortable in their homes and have nursing staff they can depend on instead of overworked, frustrated and disgruntled nurses who are more likely to abuse and neglect them.

With regard to nursing home abuse, the only thing that is better than holding responsible parties accountable for abuse and neglect is helping our loved ones avoid getting abused in the first place. By doing the appropriate research, asking the necessary questions and being extremely diligent to watch for any signs of neglect or abuse in our loved ones, Pennsylvania residents can curb many of the worst cases of abuse before they ever occur. Hopefully, with more people alert to the dangers of neglect and abuse, instances will become less frequent as our nation's baby boomer generation continues to age.
