A federal government study recently found that the care at many nursing homes and other eldercare facilities is alarmingly inadequate, and even neglectful. One third of all nursing homes have been cited for abuse after violating the rights of a resident. |
|
 |
| Nursing home abuse and neglect takes many forms: |
- Incorrect administration of medication
- Lack of supervision
- Inattention to residents
- Unsanitary conditions
|
- Untrained or insufficient staff
- Improper use of physical restraints or medicines
- Substandard medical care
- Defective equipment
|
- Poor personal hygiene
- Bed or pressure sores
- Unexplained injuries or falls
- Malnutrition or dehydration
- Sleeplessness or excessive sleeping
- Weight gain or loss
|
- Alteration in mood or personality
- Depression, anxiety or withdrawal
- Theft of money or personal property
- Physical or sexual abuse
- Unexpected or accidental death
|
|
- Keep a diary or some other record of the events you find troubling.
- Talk to the administrator or care providers at the home. Make sure you keep the following information about the conversation:
- The date and time
- Who you spoke with, and their role in caring for your loved one
- The reason for the conversation
- The outcome of the conversation
- Make sure the nursing home records any meeting you have with staff and care givers, and that you get a copy of their meeting report.
- If you fear that there may be repercussions against your loved one, consider that a major warning signal.
- If you are ever prevented from visiting a loved one, call Robert Peirce & Associates immediately.
