OxyContin (Oxycodone) is a narcotic analgesic used to treat moderate to severe pain caused by arthritis, back pain, cancer, and other types of ailments. While small amounts of the ingredient Oxycodone are in a number of other pain relievers, the brand OxyContin contains significant amounts of Oxycodone in a timed-release formula. The claim made by Purdue Pharma, its manufacturer, that the drug is less subject to abuse than other narcotics, is likely the cause for its over-prescription to people whose pain was not severe enough to warrant such a strong pain reliever. It has been widely abused since it came onto the market in 1995.
