In March 2004, the FDA asked Zyprexa (olanzapine) manufacturer Eli Lilly to issue a warning describing the increased risk of hyperglycemia and diabetes in patients taking this medication. Zyprexa, an atypical antipsychotic, is used to treat individuals with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. One year after the FDA recommendation, in a June 2005 settlement, Eli Lilly agreed to pay $700 million to settle lawsuits against the company. Claimants stated that the company did not warn patients that Zyprexa is associated with a heightened risk of diabetes. In January 2007, the company announced further settlements not to exceed $500 million.
The FDA had approved Zyprexa in 1996. The new antipsychotic represented an opportunity for patients to effectively manage their diseases with fewer side effects. But many patients taking the drug became affected by hyperglycemia and diabetes, side effects not clearly displayed on the drug label by the drug maker. If you suffered any problems resulting from the use of using Zyprexa, please obtain a Free Consultation by submitting our online form, or by calling 1-800-543-9859.
