Care facility accused of nursing home abuse

A nursing home in a southeast state has become the subject of scrutiny over nursing home neglect violations. The residential and medical care facility received a citation from its state Department of Health and Human Services, because it allegedly failed to prevent nursing home abuse from occurring. The citation was specifically related to the discovery of bruises on the body of a now deceased resident.

It is not uncommon for staff members to become engaged in physical fights with residents at nursing facilities in Pennsylvania. This is what appears to have occurred in the instant case. Allegedly, staff members got into a scuffle with a resident who suffered from seizure disorder, dementia and various ailments.

Even if a patient with severe dementia resists medical care or treatment, there is a specific way that such instances should be handled in order to avoid the occurrence of nursing home abuse. Tragically, after the scuffle and injuries in this case, the elderly male patient died a little more than two weeks later. At this time, the nursing home is denying any responsibility for the man’s death. The home says that it did not deny the man appropriate care, however, and claims it can prove that fact.

The more diligent family members work to ensure that their relatives are getting the level of care they deserve, the more likely they will catch nursing home neglect and abuse before it becomes dangerous. Nevertheless, nursing home abuse is a harsh reality that many Pennsylvania residents must face every single day. Those who suspect that nursing home abuse is occurring at the facility where they or a relative lives may wish to pursue legal action -- not only to put a stop to the abuse, but to seek restitution for the damages and injuries that they or a loved one has suffered.
