Staffing shortages leave nursing homes overwhelmed, patients vulnerable, experts say

Deteriorating conditions in the long-term care industry, compounded by unprecedented staffing shortages, are posing significant challenges as the aging population increases. In an analysis of nursing homes in Western Pennsylvania, 53% were rated as “below average” or “much below average” by the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Additionally, around 13% of these facilities appeared on a little-known list of facilities flagged for abuse or neglect, raising concerns about patient care and safety.
