FDA Recalls Powdered Infant Formula Over Bacterial Contamination

The February 2022 recall on certain lots of powdered infant formula products comes in response to three complaints of Cronobacter infection and one complaint of Salmonella poisoning. According to the complaints, the bacterial infection happened as a direct result of ingesting baby formula manufactured at Abbott Laboratories in Sturgis, Michigan.

Abbott has yet to report the number of products affected by the recall. It did, however, state that the recall applies to Similac, Alimentum, and EleCare products manufactured in Sturgis with:

  • Product numbers that contain K8, SH, or Z2;
  • Product numbers that start between 22 and 37; and
  • Expiry dates of April 1, 2022 or later.

Sadly, all four complaints claimed that the affected infants had to be hospitalized for treatment. Although the investigation is ongoing, there is reason to believe that Cronobacter contributed to an infant’s death in one of the complaints.

Signs and Symptoms of Salmonella Poisoning

Serious cases of Salmonella poisoning, medically referred to as salmonellosis, may be accompanied by symptoms such as the following:

  • High fever
  • Headaches
  • Body aches
  • Fatigue/lethargy
  • Blood in the urine and/or stool

While milder cases of salmonellosis often resolve without any medical intervention, don’t wait to see a doctor if your child develops the above symptoms. In the worst cases, salmonellosis can lead to death.

Symptoms of Cronobacter Infection

Due to the commonality of Salmonella, most people have heard of it. The same cannot be said for Cronobacter sakazakii, a rare bacterium that often proves fatal.

Sadly, the initial signs and symptoms can be misleading, as they consist of a fever accompanied by:

  • Poor feeding
  • Lethargy
  • Crying

If you may have given your baby a recalled Abbott infant formula product, and they develop these symptoms, don’t wait to take them to the doctor. Once Cronobacter progresses, it can lead to sepsis and meningitis—two potentially fatal medical conditions.

A parent’s worst nightmare is to have any sort of harm come to their child. Abbott must be held responsible for putting infants across the nation at risk of serious bacterial infection. With rules and regulations in place to prevent Salmonella and Cronobacter outbreaks, it is all the more egregious that Abbott failed to ensure its powdered infant formula was safe to consume.
