Chantix & Heart Attacks
A clinical study by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found that patients taking Chantix are at an increased risk of heart attack if they also have cardiovascular disease. The FDA did not, however, recall the drug. Instead, it required Chantix to add a warning label indicating the increased risk of heart attacks and required Pfizer to conduct a larger analysis.
Chantix & Suicide
Chantix has also been linked to neuropsychiatric symptoms, including behavioral changes, aggression, depression and an increased risk of suicide. In fact, use of Chantix was linked to nearly 550 suicides in one five-year period.
Like with the connection between Chantix and heart attacks, however, the FDA did not take action to recall the drug and instead required a black box warning about the potential behavior changes brought on by the drug. It has also asked Pfizer to study the link between Chantix and mood alterations by 2017.
