Nearly 40 Years of Trusted Experience – Let Our Pittsburgh Attorneys Help You

When the public realized the real effects of cigarettes, more and more people began looking for a way to quit—until e-cigarettes hit the market.

E-cigarettes were designed to be a healthier alternative to smoking, one that carried fewer toxins and none of the addictive qualities that traditional cigarettes came with. Unfortunately, now that scientists have had the time to evaluate the real effects of these devices, we’ve learned that using e-cigs, or “vaping” can be even more dangerous than smoking traditional cigarettes. Even worse, e-cigarette companies have been caught marketing specifically to teenagers and young adults—those most susceptible to the harmful effects of e-cig use.

About Juul

Juul Labs, Inc, or Juul for short, manufacture some of the most popular e-cigarettes on the market. This popular e-cig maker sells USB drive-shaped electronic cigarettes that use cartridges, or “Juul pods,” to release a vapor that resembles the smoke released in traditional cigarettes. The sale of e-cigarettes, like those created by Juul, increased substantially in the past decade, especially when manufacturers began to make flavored pods.

Plaintiffs who have already filed suits against Juul allege that the company failed to inform users of the potential risk of nicotine addiction and other harmful side effects. In fact, in response to these allegations, Juul has continually maintained that their products are safer than traditional cigarettes—posting misleading information on their websites, in ads, on social media, and elsewhere. Though they claim that they only encourage adult use of Juul products, they continue to market specifically to younger demographics.

E-Cigarette Advertising Targets Teens

Several e-cigarette companies, including Juul, have received backlash, both publically and legally, for marketing tactics that specifically target young adults, teenagers, and even children. The introduction of flavored Juul pods was particularly important, as it highlighted kid-friendly flavors like mango, crème brulee, and other sweet, fruity options meant to entice potential users. Additionally, Juul was accused of using noticeably young people in their ads and releasing marketing campaigns specifically geared towards social media platforms, which further appeals to teenagers and young demographics who are most susceptible to the harmful effects of e-cig devices.

The Dangers Associated with E-Cigarettes

Unfortunately, the use of e-cigarettes, as common as they may be, can lead to serious health issues, including a lifelong nicotine addiction, impaired cognitive development, lung problems, and more. Although e-cigs do not burn tobacco, as traditional cigarettes do, they use chemicals instead, which can be just as, if not more, toxic. Additionally, though some e-cigarette cartridges contain less nicotine than traditional cigarettes, Juul e-cigs contain substantially more than their competitors. According to Juul Labs, just one of their pods contains the same amount of nicotine as an entire packet of traditional cigarettes. In short, the exposure to high doses of nicotine and toxic chemicals can make the use of e-cigarette extremely dangerous.

Potential side effects associated with vaping include:

  • Nicotine addiction
  • High blood pressure
  • Seizures
  • Coma
  • Tachycardia (a heart condition)
  • Impaired brain development in adolescents
  • Impaired lung development in adolescents

According to several medical studies, including this 2015 study published in PubMed, the harmful toxins in e-cigarette cartridges, like Juul, are especially harmful for younger users who are still growing and developing. The use of excessive levels of nicotine, aerosol, and other chemicals can affect the developing brain, leading to diminished cognitive abilities, especially as it applies to problem-solving and decision-making. Additionally, the use of benzoic acid, a common e-cig ingredient, causes coughing, sore throat, nausea, vomiting, and severe abdominal pain, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Our team of experienced Pittsburgh lawyers is passionate about fighting for the rights of injured victims harmed by the dangerous products sold by Juul Labs and other e-cigarette companies. When these big companies create their products, they are frequently aware of the potentially harmful effects, yet they continue to sell them to unsuspecting users, and, worse still, to teenagers and vulnerable adolescents. If you or your child suffered serious health issues after using Juul e-cigarettes or another vaping product, our firm is prepared to file a claim on your behalf.
